Jagriti Sewing Academy
The Jagriti Sewing Academy grew out of gently listening and building trust with the women of
Ballia. The women shared that learning to sew would enable them to repair their children’s
uniforms. Personal presentation is of great importance and pride to the women of Ballia.
The desire to learn to sew signified a large shift in the mindset of the community. School had
become something they believed in, wanted to invest in and were proud of. So, when the women
requested sewing lessons, we set to work immediately.
Sewing classes have also given rise to the opportunity for women to move into micro-enterprise
and self-sustainably supplement the family income.
